The United States Department of Interior wants to take a terrible and very unsafe golf course, and make it into a great, safe, and prestigious golf course. They have an absolute right to do so, President Donald Trump wrote in a Truth Social post, as reported by the sources.

That declaration underscores an escalating federal legal battle over the future of East Potomac Golf Links in Washington, D.C., where the administration’s push to redevelop the historic public property has run into a firm roadblock from U.S. District Judge Ana C. Reyes. Trump announced a plan to close the 106-year-old course and said that work would begin Nov. 15, targeting a new golf course in approximately 15 months.

Temporary Restraining Order Halts Tree Removal

The current courtroom showdown stems from a lawsuit filed on Feb. 13 by the D.C. Preservation League alongside two regular patrons of the public links, the sources reported. Plaintiffs allege the government had dumped potentially hazardous debris at the site and begun pursuing the overhaul without complying with federal environmental and historic preservation mandates under the National Environmental Policy Act and the National Historic Preservation Act.

The dispute intensified sharply when the National Park Service removed approximately 430 healthy, non-invasive trees on the weekend of Oct. 10. Judge Reyes issued a temporary restraining order on Oct. 13 blocking further tree clearing through Oct. 26, warning government attorneys not to act first and ask forgiveness later. Reyes noted that notice of the weekend cutting was filed at 4:55 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, leaving just 15 hours before cutting began on a federal holiday weekend.

While administration lawyers pointed to a 2019 Cultural Landscape Report as justification for clearing dead and hazardous timber, Reyes rejected the coincidence, stating in court that there is no universe in which all of this just coincidentally happened at the same time, as detailed by the sources.

Recusal Motion Denied Amid Rising Tension

The legal friction prompted the administration to file a motion on Oct. 16 seeking to disqualify Reyes from the case, accusing her of judicial bias. Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward Jr. claimed the judge’s conduct displayed a pattern of animus, citing a heated Oct. 12 hearing where Reyes allegedly belittled and shouted at a Justice Department lawyer, the sources reported.

Reyes denied the recusal bid in a 13-page opinion filed Sunday, writing that it is easy to weaponize selective quotations to bring a baseless recusal motion, but much harder to meet the demanding legal standard against a full record.

Trump attacked Reyes on Truth Social, calling her a crazed lunatic and suggesting she may be insane, according to the sources.

Midterm Elections and Congressional Oversight Loom

The litigation unfolds against a shifting political backdrop in Washington ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections. Political prognosticators anticipate that Democrats will capture the House of Representatives, setting up U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, to potentially take over as chair of the committee when the new Congress is sworn in on Jan. 3, the sources reported.

In that committee role, Raskin—who served as the lead House impeachment manager during Trump’s second impeachment trial in 2021—could utilize subpoenas, hearings, and formal investigations to probe the costs, logistics, and environmental impacts of the East Potomac redevelopment.

Appellate Review and Upcoming Court Deadlines

The situation is setting the table for Trump to seek appellate review in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, the sources reported.

Is Judge Reyes' Naivete To Blame For 400 Trees Chopped Down At East Potomac?

Destroyed trees cannot be replaced, meaning the ground landscape and vistas of the public course are irrevocably altered.
