Judo Stars Shine on the Catwalk: Natsumi Tsunoda and Ryuju Nagayama Make Stunning Modeling Debut in Paris
Natsumi Tsunoda Makes Modeling Debut at Elite Japan Launch Party
Natsumi Tsunoda, the 32-year-old judoka who won a gold medal in the women’s 48 kg category at the Paris Olympics, has made her modeling debut. She attended the “Elite Japan Launch Party” held in Tokyo, where she appeared on the runway as the finale, wearing a stunning dress that was a remake of a crane-themed white wedding kimono by kimono dress brand “Kanon.”
Tsunoda’s glamorous appearance, which was a departure from her usual judo uniform and sportswear, captivated the visitors. At the Paris Olympics, she contributed to Japan’s 500th gold medal at the Summer Olympics and also helped Japan win a silver medal in the mixed team final against France in the 57kg weight class.
Ryuju Nagayama, a fellow judoka and bronze medalist in the men’s 60 kg class at the Paris Olympics, also appeared as a model for the American denim brand Levi’s. He walked down the runway in a top-to-bottom denim outfit, exuding confidence and courage.
After completing her modeling debut, Tsunoda reflected on her experience, saying, “I was more nervous than I was during a match, and my mind went blank, but it was a good experience.” She also shared that, as a child, she dreamed of wearing cute costumes, such as dresses for Halloween, but found her first modeling experience at 32 to be “fresh and embarrassing.”
Nagayama, on the other hand, enjoyed his experience, saying, “I bowed when I entered as a judo athlete. I’m not exactly a model (I’m 156cm tall), but it was a good experience. I’ve always wanted to try denim on denim, so I’ll give it a go from now on.” Tsunoda praised Nagayama’s confidence on the runway, saying, “She walked with great confidence.”
Tsunoda, who has stated that she has little chance of competing in the Los Angeles Olympics in four years’ time, has already resumed training. Although she denied any immediate retirement, she indicated her intention to continue competing for a while, saying, “I first want to heal my injury and then start again.”
