The Unfortunate end of a Micro-Carnivore
Fossilized remains of a Tharsis fish, a small, suction-feeding micro-carnivore, have revealed a surprising and rather grim cause of death: suffocation by a large, floating belemnite. The discovery, detailed in scientific Reports, offers a fascinating glimpse into the ecological interactions and perils of the ancient oceans.
Tharsis fish, known for their diet of tiny organisms like larvae and zooplankton, are relatively common fossils. Their feeding strategy involved gulping up small prey. However, this particular specimen met its end in a far more dramatic fashion.
The Perilous Life of Belemnites
Belemnites,ancient marine cephalopods that resembled squid with long,hooded bodies and multiple arms,inhabited the open ocean. Unlike their more common counterparts, their fossils are less frequently found.
interestingly,belemnite fossils discovered in the Plattenkalk basins of Eichstätt and Solnhofen frequently enough exhibit a peculiar characteristic: their internal shells are overgrown with bivalves. This suggests that these belemnites died and, kept buoyant by a gas-filled shell, drifted in the water column. Other organisms, like clam-like molluscs, would then colonize these floating carcasses, feeding on the decaying soft tissue.
A Deadly Meal
The researchers hypothesize that the Tharsis fish was not actively hunting the belemnites. Instead, these micro-carnivores likely fed on remnants of decaying soft tissue, algae, or bacterial growth found on floating objects. It appears that a streamlined, floating belemnite rostrum – the internal shell structure – was accidentally sucked into the fish’s mouth.
“Even though the fish tried too pass the obstructive item through its gills, there was no way of getting rid of it, leading to death by suffocation,” the paleontologists explain in their paper. The sheer size and shape of the belemnite prevented the fish from expelling it,ultimately leading to its fatal suffocation.
This discovery highlights the unexpected dangers that even seemingly passive marine organisms could pose to their ancient predators, offering a poignant reminder of the complex and sometimes brutal realities of prehistoric ecosystems.
