Justice Minister Candidate Park Seong-jae: Confirmation Hearing and Controversial Statements

Staff hearing for Justice Minister candidate Park Seong-jae

Park Seong-jae, candidate for justice minister, said of his relationship with Attorney General Lee Won-seok, who is 10 years his junior at the Judicial Research and Training Institute: “I think every person plays their duties in his or her position.”

Candidate Park said during his confirmation hearing in the National Assembly today: “If the Attorney General fulfills his duties in accordance with the law and principles as Attorney General, and fulfills his original duties as a minister, each will maintain the best position.”

Candidate Park explained his relationship with President Lee by saying, “I have worked with President Lee several times, but after I became president, I saw him once at my mother-in-law’s mall,” and Democratic Party congressman Korean Park Beom-gye said: “There are concerns about internal secret communications.” When I pointed this out to him, he replied, “I’m sorry, but I didn’t live that way.”

People Power Party lawmaker Park Hyeong-soo asked if he thought the investigation into Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myeong was a targeted investigation, and candidate Park responded, “I understand that the clues to the investigation have begun during the previous administration, and it is difficult to evaluate whether it can be called a targeted investigation, but it is difficult to evaluate it as a political incident: “I don’t think the crime is appropriate,” he said.

When Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Young-bae was asked his opinion on abolishing the Prosecutor General’s investigative command authority over the Attorney General, he said: “Even before the abolition, the investigative command authority should be used with extreme moderation and, if possible, not at all.”
