Justice Ministry to Determine Parole for President Yoon’s Mother-in-Law Choi Eun-soon

The Justice Ministry is expected to discuss next week whether to parole Choi Eun-soon, mother-in-law of President Yoon Seok-yeol.

The Ministry of Justice will hold a regular meeting of the April Parole Review Committee at the Gwacheon Government Complex next Tuesday, the 23rd, to deliberate on the extent and objective of parole.

It is reported that President Yoon’s mother-in-law Choi, who is imprisoned in the Seoul East Detention Center, is also subject to this parole review.

Mr. Choi, who was sentenced to one year in prison by the appeals court in July last year on charges of forging bank statements, etc., was arrested in court. His sentence expires in July this year and he is subject to parole review because he has served 70% of his sentence

Mr Choi was also eligible for parole review in February, but the review failed.

Mr. Choi was subsequently dropped from the screening in March, but appears to have been added to the shortlist again this month.

If at the end of the meeting the reviewer determines that Mr. Choi is “eligible for parole,” the parole decision will be made after final approval from Justice Minister Park Seong-jae.

After going through this process, if Choi is finally selected as a parolee this month, he will be released on the 30th.

Previously, during the land purchase process in Docon-dong, Jungwon-gu, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do, Mr. Choi was sentenced to one year in prison in both the first and second trials on charges of forgery of balance sheet certificates to make it appears that about 34.9 billion won was deposited in a savings bank from April to October 2013. I was sentenced to prison.

Mr Choi also requested bail to be sentenced in the Supreme Court without detention, but in November last year the Supreme Court did not accept it and upheld the sentence as it stands.
