Former National Fencing Team Member’s Ex-Boyfriend Sentenced to 4 Years in Prison

Jeon Cheong-jo, the ex-boyfriend of former national fencing team member Nam Hyun-hee, has been sentenced to 4 years in prison for various crimes, including child abuse and fraud.

Jeon was charged with hitting Nam’s middle school nephew with the handle of a children’s golf club in August last year and sending a threatening text message demanding pocket money in April the same year. He was also accused of pretending to be the hidden son of a chaebol family and extorting money from several individuals.

The court ruled that Jeon committed a serious offense by attacking a young student with a dangerous object and threatening to stop him from reporting the case. Additionally, Jeon was criticized for lying about his identity as a wealthy man and taking money from victims despite being a repeat offender.

However, the court took into account Jeon’s admission of guilt, which was seen as a mitigating factor in the sentencing. Jeon’s lawyer stated that the possibility of an appeal is low, given the severity of the crimes and the lack of evidence to support a reduced sentence.

In a separate case, Jeon was sentenced to 12 years in prison for committing a 3 billion won fraud while posing as a third-generation chaebol. The prosecution has requested a reinvestigation into Nam’s involvement in the fraud, despite the police initially deciding not to forward her as an accomplice.

Related Cases

Jeon’s sentencing has sparked concerns about the prevalence of child abuse and fraud in South Korea. The case has also raised questions about the effectiveness of the justice system in dealing with repeat offenders.
