Justice Served: Ko Wenzhe’s Detention Sparks Jubilation as Taipei Crowd Cheers, ‘God Sees All
Former Taipei Mayor Ke Wenzhe Detained in Jinghua City Case
Former Taipei Mayor Ke Wenzhe was accused of profiteering and accepting bribes in the Jinghua City case. He was ordered to be detained without permission on the evening of September 5th. At about 6:30 p.m., he was transferred to the Taipei Detention Center in Tucheng District, New Taipei City.
The Taipei District Prosecutor’s Office investigated the Jinghua City case and found that Ke Wenzhe was guilty of crimes such as accepting bribes and seeking profits in violation of the Corruption Crimes Act. The Taipei District Court ruled on September 2nd that Ke Wenzhe should be returned without bail. However, the Beijing Prosecutor’s Office filed a protest on September 3rd, and on September 4th, the Taiwan High Court revoked the original ruling and sent it back to the Taipei District Court for an updated ruling.
On September 5th, the North Court held a detention court again and ruled that Ke Wenzhe’s detention is prohibited. Ke Wenzhe boarded a prison van at Taipei District Court at 5:50 and went to the Taipei Detention Center in Tucheng District, New Taipei City. About 300 people gathered outside the detention center, clapping and cheering, and some people shouted, “Tucheng’s choice, Ke Wenzhe”, “It’s cool” and “God has eyes”.
Men holding up homemade signs that read, “Congratulations on entering the first row of Tucheng, Tucheng’s choice is Ke Wenzhe, come in, come in” were also seen outside the detention center. About five minutes after Ke Wenzhe was sent in, people outside the venue began to leave one after another.
