A chilling scene unfolded at the Milano Skating Arena on Friday as Polish short-track speed skater Kamila Sellier sustained a serious facial injury during the women’s 1,500-meter quarterfinal at the 2026 Winter Olympics. The race was immediately halted as medical personnel attended to Sellier, who was cut above her left eye by the blade of an opponent’s skate during a multi-skater crash.
The incident occurred with nine laps remaining in the heat, after Sellier, ranked No. 20 in the world, had briefly led the pack before being overtaken by Italy’s Arianna Fontana. As racers battled for position, Sellier lost her footing and fell, and the blade of American Kristen Santos-Griswold unfortunately made contact with her face. Both Fontana and Santos-Griswold also went down in the collision.
Sellier remained on the ice for several minutes, shielded from view by a white sheet as medical staff provided treatment. She was eventually placed on a stretcher and wheeled off the ice to a round of applause from the crowd, and transported for further medical attention. Initial reports indicated Sellier received stitches above her eye at the arena before being taken to the hospital for additional tests.
According to Aleksander Dzięciołowski, a journalist with TVP Sport, Sellier is being evaluated for a possible facial fracture. “Prawdopodobieństwo złamania kości policzkowej. Opuchlizna tak duża, że nie może otworzyć oka. Policzek zszyty — jest w drodze do szpitala,” Dzięciołowski reported via X (formerly Twitter). This translates to: “Probability of a cheekbone fracture. Swelling so great that she cannot open her eye. Cheek stitched – she is on her way to the hospital.”
However, there was also encouraging news. Patrycja Maliszewska, a fellow Polish speed skater, relayed information that Sellier’s eye was not injured. “Jest informacja, że z okiem Kamili jest wszystko ok. I to jest najważniejszy komunikat na ten moment,” Maliszewska stated, meaning, “There is information that everything is okay with Kamila’s eye. And that is the most important message at the moment.”
Further updates from Mateusz Ligęza of Radio ZET indicated that Sellier is undergoing a procedure to reopen the wound to allow doctors to assess the extent of any potential bone damage. “Kamila jest obecnie w drodze na zabieg polegający na ponownym otwarciu rany, aby lekarze mogli dokładnie ocenić stan kości. Decyzja została podjęta po wynikach tomografii komputerowej, które wykazały niewielkie złamanie. Po zabiegu Kamila pozostanie na noc w szpitalu na obserwacji. Jest bardzo dzielna – wstała z łóżka o własnych siłach. Przez cały czas są przy niej rodzice oraz lekarz reprezentacji,” Ligęza reported. This translates to: “Kamila is currently on her way to a procedure to reopen the wound so that doctors can accurately assess the condition of the bone. The decision was made after the results of a CT scan, which showed a small fracture. After the procedure, Kamila will remain in the hospital overnight for observation. She is very brave – she got out of bed on her own. Her parents and the team doctor are with her all the time.”
The incident had repercussions beyond Sellier’s own Olympic campaign. Santos-Griswold was penalized for an illegal lane pass that contributed to the accident, effectively ending her participation in the Games without a medal. Reports indicate she was visibly upset by the penalty and the resulting consequences.
The Polish team’s struggles in the women’s 1500m event didn’t end with Sellier’s injury. Natalia Maliszewska finished fourth in her quarterfinal heat but did not advance based on time. Gabriela Topolska also fell during her quarterfinal, finishing last after contact with another skater.
Arianna Fontana, the 15-time Olympic medalist, was also involved in the crash but was able to continue. She finished second in her quarterfinal, advancing to the semifinal round, and ultimately progressed to the finals, narrowly securing a victory over Zhang Chutong. Fontana is pursuing a tie with Norwegian cross-country skier Marit Bjørgen for the most decorated Winter Olympian.
The race pause allowed medical staff to address Sellier’s injury and clean a trail of blood from the final corner of the track. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks in short-track speed skating, a sport known for its intense competition and close-quarters racing. Racers typically wear helmets without face shields, relying instead on protective eyewear, but Sellier’s glasses were dislodged during the collision, leaving her vulnerable.
As of , Sellier remains hospitalized for observation and further evaluation. The Polish Olympic Committee has yet to release a comprehensive statement regarding her condition, but updates are expected as they become available. The focus now shifts to her recovery and well-being, while the short-track speed skating competition continues at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.
