A 45-year-old Kansas City, Missouri man died after being struck by multiple vehicles on U.S. 169 Highway in Miami County, according to KMBC. Investigators are searching for the driver of a third vehicle involved in the collision who may not realize they hit a person.
The Fatal Collision on U.S. 169 Highway
The caller told dispatchers that the man, later identified by the Miami County Sheriff’s Office as Curtis A. Thaxton, began running toward her vehicle and forced her to back away. While she remained on the phone with dispatchers, a passing vehicle struck Thaxton. That driver returned to the scene.
As the first Miami County deputy arrived shortly afterward, a second vehicle struck Thaxton. That driver initially left the scene before turning around to meet with deputies. Investigators believe a third vehicle also struck Thaxton during the sequence of events. Emergency personnel immediately started lifesaving measures, but Thaxton was transported to a local hospital where medical staff pronounced him dead. Authorities do not suspect foul play in the fatality.
Search for the Black Hyundai Tucson Driver
Investigators are focusing their efforts on locating the driver of a black Hyundai Tucson with black wheels that traveled northbound on U.S. 169 on Sunday night. The vehicle was directly behind the second car that struck Thaxton. Based on the circumstances of the collision, investigators believe it is possible the driver of the Hyundai may not realize their vehicle struck the individual,
the Miami County Sheriff’s Office stated in a public post on Facebook.
Law enforcement officials want to speak with the Hyundai driver to establish the exact timeline of the crash.
