A growing petition is calling on Bratislava’s mayor to prevent Kanye West, also known as Ye, from headlining the Rubicon festival in mid-July. The petition organizers are calling the planned appearance “an insult to historic memory” and a “glorification of wartime violence.”
The Rubicon festival had touted West’s exclusive performance, billing him as a “hip-hop visionary, cultural icon and controversial genius.”
The petition, backed by groups like Peace for Ukraine and Cities for Democracy, has garnered more than 3,500 signatures. It accuses West of “repeatedly and openly adhering to symbols and [an] ideology connected with the darkest period of modern global history,” referencing his history of antisemitic statements and actions.
Specifically, the petition cites West’s sale of a T-shirt displaying a swastika and his May release of a song titled “Heil Hitler,” which samples a 1935 speech by Adolf Hitler. The song was banned in Germany and removed from most streaming platforms but gained traction on X, formerly Twitter.
Organizers argue that hosting West would be “unacceptable” due to his “dangerous public attitudes that are in direct conflict with European memory and past obligation.” They also fear the performance could attract extremist groups and promote unacceptable ideologies, noting that over 70,000 Slovak Jews were murdered during World War II.
