Quebec’s Minister of Transport has sharply criticized a planned public awareness campaign by the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) – the province’s automobile insurance board – deeming it a display of “obvious lack of judgment.” The campaign, titled “Are you Karaok to drive?” aimed to use modified lyrics of popular Quebec songs to promote responsible driving and discourage impaired driving.
campaign concept Draws Fire
The SAAQ announced the campaign, inviting journalists to participate in an event centered around singing to raise awareness about the dangers of driving with weakened faculties. The concept involved altering the lyrics of well-known Quebec songs to deliver a message of responsible driving.
However, the Minister quickly reacted to the press release, expressing strong disapproval. She highlighted the poor timing of the proclamation, particularly given the ongoing fallout from the disastrous launch of the SAAQclic platform. This platform rollout has been plagued with issues and has led to significant public frustration.
Minister Demands Campaign Review & Leadership Change
“Both the concept of this campaign and the moment chosen to announce it reflect an obvious lack of judgment,” the Minister stated. She confirmed having discussed the matter with the SAAQ’s new interim CEO, who reportedly agreed with her assessment.
The Minister has requested the SAAQ to thoroughly review the theme of its awareness campaign. She further emphasized the need for a change in leadership at the SAAQ,following Wednesday’s dismissal of the Crown corporation’s CEO,Éric Ducharme. ”This is yet another example of the need to change leadership at the SAAQ,” she wrote.
Campaign cancellation
Responding to the Minister’s criticism, the SAAQ announced the cancellation of the “Are you Karaok to drive?” event on Thursday afternoon. This swift action demonstrates the seriousness with which the Minister’s concerns were taken.
This situation underscores the ongoing challenges facing the SAAQ as it attempts to regain public trust following the SAAQclic debacle and navigate public perception surrounding its awareness campaigns. The minister’s strong stance signals a commitment to accountability and responsible decision-making within the association.
