As Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) President Heo Heo-yeon continues to make waves with his comments about the possibility of some professional baseball teams relocating to their hometowns, it has been reported that the KBO is discussing ways of building a new professional baseball stadium with some local governments in the Gyeonggi region.

Attention is given to what effect the move to build a new baseball stadium will have in a situation where the local government of the home town of the current team and the KBO are part of the ‘relocation debate’.

According to the KBO on the 2nd, the KBO is said to have recently proposed a plan to build a new baseball stadium to multiple local governments in Gyeonggi-do and is discussing it. Even if there is no immediate team, the intention is to create a multipurpose baseball stadium in a local government with a rapidly growing population and a dense transportation network to boost box office success.

There are several basic local governments in Gyeonggi-do that meet this condition. Except for Suwon City, which is currently home to Suwon KT Wiz, there are many metropolitan local governments that are growing as the population continues to flow, including special cities with a population of 1 million. These areas have something in common: they were mainly created as part of a new town development plan and have relatively good residential complexes and transport infrastructure. In fact, based on this location, some local governments have a history of pushing to attract professional baseball teams in the past.

In particular, as a war of nerves is felt between the local government of the current club and the KBO, attention is focused on the background of the discussion about building a new baseball stadium in a third local government.

President Heo Heo-yeon recently caused controversy after revealing that the club was suffering losses due to problems with NC Dinos’ Changwon home stadium being inaccessible, and that he made a statement to the effect that “we can move the stadium up even if we have to pay a penalty.” For this reason, there is speculation that a local government that decides to build a new baseball stadium could be considering relocating the current club.

In response to this, the KBO drew a line, saying that there are no definite ongoing issues and that the issue of relocating the hometown is not being considered.

A KBO official said, “Nothing has been confirmed at this time, and it is difficult to confirm in detail what discussions are going on with specific local governments.” He added, “It is true that we communicate extensively with different regions and local governments in terms of developing baseball infrastructure, but immediately, like the relocation of the hometown.” “We are not considering it,” he said.
