Ke Wenzhe at a Crossroads: Can He Weather the Storm of Internal and External Challenges
Ko Wenzhe, chairman of the Taiwan People’s Party and former mayor of Taipei City, has been detained since September 5 for his involvement in the Jinghua City scandal. He is about to expire for two months.
During this period, Taiwanese prosecutors launched several waves of searches and interviews. Taiwanese media described it as “digging three feet under the ground”. The number of people detained in this case has reached 7. Taiwanese media reported that the Taipei District Prosecutor’s Office has initially grasped Ke Wenzhe’s involvement. Evidence of the “crime of profiteering” was obtained, but no evidence was found that Ke Wenzhe was involved in “killing with one blow” for accepting bribes. On October 25, Taiwan prosecutors requested to continue to postpone the detention of Ke Wenzhe.

The Jinghua City case has not been completed, and the “leaderless” Taiwan People’s Party can only hold a speech across Taiwan to fully support Ke Wenzhe. There are many discussions among the outside world on whether the Taiwan People’s Party is facing a bubble. At this time, the Taiwan People’s Party’s polls stopped falling and rebounded. Public opinion believes that although party chairman Ke Wenzhe was detained, his supporters have not dispersed because of this, and future development will entirely depend on the evolution of Ke Wenzhe’s judicial case.
