A detective stated,”We believe that it’s significant to send a strong message that deter persons from getting involved in serious disorder.” The officer elaborated on the gravity of the situation, explaining, “police believe that if a strong deterrent message is not sent, the public disorder could lead to death or serious injury to members of the public.” These statements highlight the PSNI’s commitment to public safety and thier proactive approach to preventing escalating violence.
Defence Arguments and Judicial Decision
During the bail application, defence counsel Grant Powles presented a compelling case for his client, emphasizing that the teenager had “just turned 18” and possessed a “wholly clear record.” Mr. Powles argued that the defendant’s address in Carrick would naturally keep him away from Ballymena, a key area of concern. He further submitted that with the support of his family, who could provide supervision, the teenager could be released under a package of bail conditions designed to address the police’s apprehensions.
However, District Judge Natasha Fitzsimmons was not persuaded.While acknowledging that Mr. Powles “has made point he conceivably could,” she ultimately stated, “I’m not satisfied that Crawford could be freed.” The judge’s decision to refuse bail was based on the assessment that there was ”a real risk of further offending.”
Remand and Next Steps
