Kenya flood death toll rises to 228, over 200,000 displaced; President orders postponement of school opening for an indefinite period

Kenya’s flood situation remains worrying. Kenyan President William Ruto has put plans to reopen schools on hold until further notice. Because of the heavy rain that continues to fall and floods that still cause many deaths.

Kenya’s Interior Ministry said on May 5 that there had been more deaths from the floods and other impacts. Heavy rain has risen to 228 and at least 164 people have been injured, while the severe weather has forced 212,630 people from their homes.

President Ruto said late last week that Weather reports paint a dire picture. He referred to the possibility of Cyclone Hidaya hitting the Kenyan coast in the coming days.

Kenyan schools were initially required to open for classes this week. But the Ministry of Education has postponed the opening date of the school by a week, but now students have to wait for the opening date of the new school. Because some schools are still flooded. Some places were damaged.

The government has ordered people living near 178 dams and reservoirs that are almost full, or almost full, to evacuate or be forced from their homes.

Meanwhile, water levels at Kenya’s two main hydroelectric dams are at record highs. The government has also warned people living on both sides of the Natha River to be careful.

Recently there was good news as Cyclone Hidaya weakened significantly as it approached the coast of Tanzania. But officials are still warning people to be careful. Because it still causes heavy rain and strong winds. But the maximum wind speed was not notified in any way.
