Kenya Tyrop, who holds the women’s 10,000m world record, stabbed her husband to death

Kenya’s Agnes Tyrop, who set a new world record in the women’s 10,000m track held in Germany last month, was found dead at his home on the 13th. Kenyan police said they were looking for her husband, who disappeared after Tyrop’s death.

Kenya’s Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Chief Tom Makori said he was looking for Tyrop’s husband after receiving reports from his husband’s family saying he was crying and calling and asking God’s forgiveness for his actions.

Tyrop, 25, was found dead with a stab to the neck at his home in Iten, a long-distance track and field powerhouse in western Kenya.

Tyrop’s car, parked outside the house, had a windshield smashed, suggesting a house fight before Tyrop was killed, police said. Kenyan police said Tyrop was a victim of ‘severe crimes’ and launched a swift and comprehensive investigation. The Kenya Athletics Federation said that Tyrop, one of Kenya’s rising stars, was reportedly stabbed by her husband and is trying to find out the exact details of the incident. “Kenya has lost its jewel.”

Tyrop finished third in the women’s 10,000m at the 2017 and 2019 World Championships in Athletics, and 4th in the 5000m at the last Tokyo Olympics. She set a new women’s 10,000m world record in Germany last month.

At the age of 19, she made her name by winning the 2015 World Cross Country Championships. At the time, Tyrop was the second youngest winner of the world cross-country event.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered the police to “track and arrest the criminals responsible for Agnes murder.” “The loss of a young and promising player is unfortunate and sad and disturbs us,” Kenyatta said. It is even more painful to see the Kenyan hero Agnes lose his young life as a result of the criminal acts of a selfish and cowardly man.”

World Athletics said Tyrop’s death was “deep shock and sorrow”.
