Kerala suffered a humiliating defeat in the first match of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Kerala lost to Gujarat by 9 wickets. Batting first after losing the toss, Kerala could score only 123 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in the allotted 20 overs. Captain Sanju Samson was the only unbeaten batsman to score 54 off 43 balls for Kerala. In reply, Priyank Panchal (66) and SD Chahan (50) were the first wicket-takers to beat Kerala. For Gujarat, Rush Kalaria took two wickets while Arsan Nagwaswalla, Hardik Patel and Piyush Chawla took one wicket each.
