Iowa women’s basketball secured a commitment from post Khalia Hartwell on Oct. 2, 2026, as head coach Jan Jensen’s staff landed one of the top targets in the 2027 recruiting class. Hartwell, a 6-foot-4 center out of Westside High School in Anderson, South Carolina, chose the Hawkeyes over fellow finalists Georgia and Virginia Tech.
The commitment gives Iowa a defensive anchor for its future frontcourt. Hartwell is ranked as the nation’s No. 16 player and the No. 2 center by 247Sports, while Rivals slots her at No. 25 nationally and No. 3 at her position, with both services naming her the top prospect in South Carolina.
Gatorade Player of the Year Honors In South Carolina
Hartwell arrives in Iowa City carrying high individual accolades after a dominant junior campaign at Westside High School. She was named South Carolina’s Gatorade Player of the Year after averaging 12.4 points on 49% shooting, 8.3 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks in roughly 16 minutes per game, leading the Rams to a 27-2 record and an appearance in the 4A state championship game.
Her production scaled further during summer play. She averaged 15.1 points, 12.5 rebounds, 3.6 blocks, and 2.3 assists across 16 games for AEBL 17. Beyond her finalists Georgia and Virginia Tech, Hartwell also collected scholarship offers from Duke, Indiana, Notre Dame, and Ohio State during her recruitment.
Official Visit During Cy-Hawk Weekend In Iowa City
The standout center solidified her decision following an official visit to the University of Iowa campus. Hartwell traveled to Iowa City alongside fellow 2027 commit Jada Seubert, a guard from Wisconsin, to attend the annual Cy-Hawk football game on Sept. 12, 2026.
Hartwell’s evaluation from Overtime Select highlighted her rim protection and defensive anticipation. Scouting reports noted that her length allows her to alter shots without fouling, filling an essential role that major programs target annually.
Roster Fit In Jan Jensen’s Offense
Hartwell joins an Iowa program that is actively evolving its offensive scheme under Jensen. While recent seasons featured dominant traditional post play, the coaching staff has integrated outside shooting and blue-blood talent like first-year McKenna Woliczko into the rotation.
The addition of Hartwell—alongside existing frontcourt contributors like Ava Heiden and Layla Hays—provides the Hawkeyes with significant size and defensive versatility. It was noted that while Hartwell continues to refine her mid-range game and post moves, her athleticism and shot-blocking capability create a clear pathway for early playing time.
Iowa Prepares For Upcoming Competitive Schedule
With her commitment finalized, Hartwell becomes the second member of Iowa’s 2027 class alongside Seubert. Jensen and her staff will continue evaluating tape on their incoming class as the current Hawkeyes roster prepares for the upcoming season under the NCAA’s five-for-five rule.
