Radio One at RTÉ has unveiled a significant overhaul of its weekday programming, effective later in 2024, with changes impacting several key shows and presenters. The proclamation, made by RTÉ on Friday morning, signals a strategic shift in the station’s lineup.
Key Presenter changes
The most notable change is the appointment of David McCullagh, currently the presenter of Six One News, as the new host of The Today Show.He will replace Claire Byrne, who is departing RTÉ too join Newstalk later this year. Byrne’s move to Newstalk was previously announced, marking a significant shift in Irish broadcasting talent according to the Irish Times.
Oliver Callan’s program will continue, but with an extended format and a new broadcast time of 11am. Rachael English will remain as the presenter of News at One during lunchtime.
New and Revised Programming
A new one-hour show will be introduced at 3pm, hosted by Louise Duffy. RTÉ describes the show as offering “a vibrant mix of live music, celebrity guests, and unmissable entertainment.”
Drivetime will move to an earlier slot, starting at 4pm, and will be presented by Katie hannon and Colm Ó Mongáin.RTÉ states the program will maintain its focus on national and international news, politics, and cultural coverage.
A new sports news program is scheduled to air at 6pm, providing previews, reviews, interviews, and breaking stories from the world of sports. The host for this program has not yet been announced.
Remaining Presenter Announcements
RTÉ has yet to announce the two new presenters who will join Audrey Carville and Gavin Jennings on Morning Ireland, which airs from 7am each weekday. Further details regarding these appointments are expected in the coming weeks.
