Distilleries Pause Production Amidst US Tariff Uncertainty
The Irish drinks sector is grappling with important challenges, primarily driven by the imposition of US tariffs on EU imported goods. This economic pressure has lead to widespread production pauses across the industry, casting a shadow over the future of Irish whiskey.
KBD’s Financial Struggles Highlight Broader Industry Woes
One company feeling the brunt of these difficulties is KBD, a whiskey producer that has recently filed accounts revealing significant losses. The company’s expansion plans, funded by approximately €12 million in capital raised in 2020, were met with a series of unforeseen obstacles. The hoped-for influx of over 100,000 visitors per year to its new Fossa plant was severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Further compounding KBD’s issues were rising raw material costs, supply chain disruptions, and delays in opening the Fossa plant. These factors, coupled with global economic uncertainty surrounding tariffs, created a challenging operating habitat.
In an attempt to shore up its finances, KBD launched a plan last year to raise up to €7 million. However, filings this year indicated that the company fell substantially short of this target, securing only about €3.5 million, primarily from US-based investors.
The most recent financial statements for KBD paint a stark picture, showing losses of €1.6 million in 2022 and €513,000 in 2021. This occured despite a doubling of sales in 2022, which reached €2 million, up from €850,000 the previous year.
Major Players Scale Back Operations
The difficulties faced by KBD are not isolated. Several of Ireland’s most prominent whiskey producers have also announced production cutbacks or pauses in response to the prevailing economic climate.
Diageo, the brewer of Guinness, confirmed last month that it has ceased distilling its Roe and Co whiskey.
Irish Distillers, the producer of Jameson, announced in March that production at its Midleton, Co Cork facility would be paused from april until the summer.
* Bushmills and Tullamore Dew have also reduced thier production levels earlier this year.
The Impact of US Tariffs on Competitiveness
The core of the industry’s current predicament lies in the imposition of US tariffs, currently standing at 10%, which have been in place since April. These tariffs have significantly eroded the competitiveness of Irish whiskey in the crucial US market, placing it at a disadvantage against its american rivals.
The looming threat of even higher tariffs, with suggestions of a potential 30% levy from August 1, has prompted a significant portion of Irish whiskey makers to pause distilling operations. Reports indicate that up to 90% of Irish whiskey producers are currently taking this precautionary measure, highlighting the profound uncertainty gripping the sector. this situation underscores the delicate balance of international trade and its direct impact on heritage industries.
