Goats to Graze? Ireland ⁣Debates Natural Fire Prevention

Updated June 8, 2025

Following a contentious planning dispute in Killiney, Ireland, a new debate has emerged: whether goats are an effective and environmentally sound method for managing local vegetation and preventing fires. The discussion is active in local WhatsApp⁣ groups.

The approach involves ⁣introducing a herd of Irish goats to graze on hillsides, creating firebreaks by reducing ‍vegetation. This is particularly relevant in areas like Killiney, where a 2022 gorse fire on Mullins Hill endangered⁢ homes and injured firefighters. The use of goats for fire prevention is gaining traction among councils and land managers.

Goats have been or will be deployed ⁤in various locations, including Howth Head, Dalkey Quarry, Ardmore in Waterford, Achill⁤ Island, the Burren in County ⁤Clare, and⁤ Coole Park ⁤in County Sligo. These goats consume vegetation, including shrubs once admired by poet⁣ W.B. yeats.

However, the plan is not without⁣ its critics. A⁣ 2024 biodiversity report by Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Council noted that on Dalkey ⁤Island, constant grazing by goats has resulted in low grass and a lack of woody plants, which⁤ is not ideal for environmental conservation.

Eoghan Daltun, an ⁤author and rewilding advocate, called the idea⁣ “the height of ecological illiteracy.”

Daltun said, “The whole of Ireland was once covered in habitats like rainforests, bog, other types of forest – ⁢none of them would⁣ burn because they would all retain water and let it out slowly. The English⁣ ecologist Oliver Rackham once said that native woodlands burn like wet asbestos.”

Daltun argues that while scrub ‍can pose a fire risk, allowing woods to regrow is a more lasting⁢ solution than the continuous introduction of goats. The council maintains that using goats is “less destructive than frequent use of machinery.”

What’s next

the debate over using goats for fire prevention in Ireland is expected to continue as communities and local councils weigh‍ the benefits against potential environmental impacts.Further studies and assessments might potentially be conducted to determine the long-term effects of this approach on biodiversity and⁣ ecosystem health.
