Kim Gordon Reimagines ‘Bye Bye’ as Protest Song against Trump
Updated June 14, 2025
Kim Gordon, known for her role in Sonic Youth, has transformed her song “Bye Bye” into “Bye Bye 25!,” a pointed critique of President Trump’s policies. The new version directly addresses the administration’s alleged practice of flagging certain words to halt grant projects and research proposals. This protest song arrives as the nation anticipates “No kings” protests Saturday.
The lyrics of “Bye Bye 25!” replace the original travel-themed verses with words reportedly targeted by the Trump administration, including ”female,” “climate change,” “Hispanic,” ”women,” “mental health,” and “immigrants.”
Gordon collaborated with Vice Cooler to co-direct the music video for the reworked track. Justin Raisen, producer and collaborator, conceived the idea to rework “Bye Bye” by starting at the end of the song.
“When I was thinking of lyric ideas,it occurred to me to use words taken from a site that had all the words that Trump has essentially banned,” Gordon said. “I guess Trump does believe in cancel culture, because he is literally trying to cancel culture.”
Organizations such as the CDC, HHS, NSF, and NASA have reportedly felt the impact of these administrative actions.
Proceeds from sales of “Bye bye 25!” and a promotional T-shirt will go to Noise for Now, a nonprofit supporting reproductive rights.
Gordon’s original song “Bye Bye,” and her album, The Collective, were both nominated for Grammy Awards at the 2025 ceremony, marking her first-ever Grammy nominations. A deluxe digital edition of The Collective was released late last year, featuring “ECRP” and “Bangin’ on the Freeway.”
