Kim Hae-ran Retires After 19 Seasons: A Farewell to a Volleyball Legend

Kim Hae-ran (40), a libero of Heungkuk Life Insurance in the women’s professional volleyball division, is leaving his beloved court after completing 19 seasons of volleyball.

The Heungkuk Life Insurance volleyball team announced on the 5th, “Hae-red Kim decided to end his playing career after the season last April.”

Kim Hae-ran, who graduated from Masan Jail Girls High School and started her playing career by joining the Korea Expressway Corporation, launched as a professional player in 2005 and played for the Korea Expressway Corporation until the 2014-2015 season. After playing two seasons at KGC Ginseng Corporation (now CheongKwanJang), he wore the uniform of Heungkuk Life Insurance from the 2017-2018 season to last season. In the 2018-2019 season, Heungkuk Life Insurance won a combined championship (1st place in the regular league and victory in the championship game) and also raised the first championship trophy in their lives.

Since his debut, Kim Hae-ran has been in the court for 19 seasons, except for the 2021-2022 season when he left the court for a short time to give birth. Even in the 2022-2023 season, when she returned immediately after giving birth, she showed her potential as a ‘mother-player’ by participating in a total of 35 matches. Kim which is run by Hae is the first place in mining success ever (11,059). He wore the Taegeuk symbol and played as a member of the national team, contributing to the semi-finals at the 2012 London Olympics.

Heungkuk Life Insurance announced the news of Kim Hae-ran’s retirement and said, “We have decided to respect the opinion of the player who can no longer play on the court due to knee pain. We are grateful for the dedication of Kim Hae-ran, who has give everything to the team.” He went on to say, “We will spare no effort to provide support, including surgery, so that Kim Hae-ran can stay healthy even after retirement,” and added, “We plan to help in many ways such as that she can prepare for her second volleyball career.”

Kim Hae-ran said, “I worked hard to show a good performance on the court until the last moment. “The decision to retire was not easy,” he said “I would like to thank the fans who have supported me so far and the club who have supported my career as a player. “I was happy to be able to live as Libero Kim Hae-ran, who has been loved by many fans so far,” he said.

Heungkuk Life Insurance plans to hold a retirement ceremony for Kim Hae-red during the upcoming 2024-2025 season.
