Kings’ Gamble: Sabonis Trade Over Haliburton still Debated
Updated June 4, 2025
The Sacramento Kings‘ decision to trade Tyrese Haliburton to the Indiana Pacers for Domantas Sabonis ahead of the 2022 NBA trade deadline remains a talking point. Sacramento, driven by owner Vivek Ranadivé’s reluctance to rebuild around Haliburton and De’Aaron Fox, sought to end the longest playoff drought in North American professional sports.
Sacramento had a surplus of point guards, including Fox, Haliburton, and Davion Mitchell, but lacked a dominant center beyond Richaun Holmes.Haliburton became the most valuable trade chip for immediate roster improvement. Fox had just signed a five-year,$163 million extension, making Haliburton, still on his rookie deal,a more attractive trade asset.
In the short term, the move paid off. The Kings snapped a 16-year playoff drought, winning 48 games and achieving the NBA’s best offensive rating (119.4) at the time. Ironically, the Pacers later broke that record en route to an Eastern Conference finals appearance.
Sabonis earned All-NBA honors and became the focal point of Sacramento’s offense, facilitating open 3-pointers and dictating pace. The Kings lost to the Golden State Warriors in seven games in the first round of the 2023 NBA Playoffs and have since missed the playoffs after consecutive Play-In Tournament losses.
What’s next
The Kings will need to re-evaluate their roster and strategy to return to playoff contention in the competitive Western Conference.
