Kirby Smart Addresses NIL’s Role in College football recruiting
Updated May 29,2025
Georgia coach Kirby Smart has weighed in on the evolving landscape of college football recruiting, specifically addressing the impact of Name,Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals. Smart noted that some collectives are reportedly compensating high school players with notable monthly payments, exceeding $20,000, to secure their commitments.
Smart emphasized that these payments come from entities not directly affiliated with universities, though coaches ofen communicate with collectives to identify and target recruits. This new era of college football recruiting, fueled by NIL, has seen programs like Miami and Oregon successfully lure top prospects with substantial financial incentives.
Miami, as an example, secured five-star offensive tackle Jackson Cantwell, who cited his strong relationships with coaches Mario Cristobal and Alex Mirabal as key factors. However, super agent Drew Rosenhaus reportedly orchestrated a $2 million-per-year NIL deal for Cantwell.
Georgia also faced a tough battle to retain five-star quarterback Jared Curtis, ultimately beating out Oregon, a program known for its financial backing from Nike. Smart’s approach differs from some other programs, as he prefers to distribute NIL funds among multiple players rather than concentrating them on a single “superstar.” He also appears hesitant to promise large sums upfront, preferring to reward players based on their performance once they arrive in Athens.
Darren Heitner, a lawyer specializing in NIL issues, suggested on social media that Smart’s comments stem from georgia missing out on certain recruits. Heitner implied that schools winning recruiting battles are less likely to criticize the current system. However, even within Georgia, there have been instances where the outcome of recruiting battles remained uncertain due to opponents offering substantial late NIL deals.
“Teams that are usually good at recruiting right now are doing it,” Smart said. “Kids are getting money but if you decommit you owe that money back. These are high school kids getting money from an entity not affiliated with the university but is a collective of the university.”
What’s next
Despite these challenges, Georgia remains a top program, currently holding the no. 10 recruiting class for 2026. The Bulldogs have consistently ranked among the top teams in recent years, securing national championships in 2021 and 2022.As the NIL landscape continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how Smart’s approach will impact Georgia’s future recruiting success.
