Klarna CEO Reverses Course, Hires Humans for VIP Customer Service
Updated June 06, 2025
klarna, the buy now, pay later giant, plans to hire human workers to provide VIP customer service, according to CEO sebastian Siemiatkowski. This proclamation marks a shift for the company, which previously invested heavily in artificial intelligence (AI) to automate tasks and reduce its workforce.
Speaking at SXSW in London, Siemiatkowski addressed earlier reports about Klarna’s strategy to replace employees with AI.He emphasized that the company’s investment in AI agents has successfully cut customer support costs and boosted revenue per employee. Klarna’s workforce decreased from 5,500 to roughly 3,000 as AI took over repetitive tasks. The company intends to reinvest salary savings into employee compensation, Siemiatkowski said.
Despite the success of AI in streamlining operations, Siemiatkowski stressed the enduring value of human interaction, notably for VIP customers. Klarna’s strategy now involves balancing AI automation with personalized human support, offering customers the option of human connection.
We think offering human customer service is always going to be a VIP thing,” he said, comparing it to how people pay more for clothing stitched by hand rather than machines. “So we think that two things can be done at the same time. We can use AI to automatically take away boring jobs, things that are manual work, but we are also going to promise our customers to have a human connection.”
What’s next
Klarna will likely begin recruiting and training human customer service representatives to cater to its VIP clientele, integrating this personalized service with its existing AI-driven support system. The move signals a potential trend in the tech industry, balancing automation with the irreplaceable value of human interaction in customer relations.
