Six generations of Lamborghini V12 supercars met on a track for a direct performance comparison, piataauto.md reported on 3 October 2026. The historic lineup featured classic models using Giotto Bizzarrini’s original engine architecture alongside modern production vehicles, showcasing decades of powertrain evolution.

The Historic V12 Lineup From Miura to Revuelto

Ferruccio Lamborghini originally agreed to pay Giotto Bizzarrini 4.5 million lire plus a bonus for every horsepower the new engine produced over Ferrari’s V12. Bizzarrini delivered a 3.5-liter V12 producing 365 horsepower at 9,800 rpm. Lamborghini utilized variations of this motor until 2010, finishing its run with the Murcielago before introducing the L539 V12 on the Aventador.

British automotive publication carwow brought six distinct models to the track to test their acceleration and power output. The starting grid included the Miura, Countach, Diablo, Murcielago, Aventador, and the plug-in hybrid Revuelto. Early models offered uninhibited exhaust notes without catalytic converters or Otto particulate filters. The Diablo featured a 5.7-liter engine producing 492 horsepower in a car weighing 1,576 kilograms. A 1982 Countach 5000S brought a 4.8-liter V12 delivering 375 horsepower in a 1,480-kilogram chassis. The classic Miura P 400 SV utilized a transversely mounted 3.9-liter V12 generating 385 horsepower while weighing under 1,300 kilograms.

Classic Drag Racing Without Launch Control

Because these vintage supercars lack modern launch control systems, drivers had to start runs at speeds of at least 15 to 16 kilometers per hour to protect rare clutches. During the initial classic car rounds, the Countach and Diablo ran closely together. The Countach was driven by its owner, who managed clutch and gearbox wear conservatively, while carwow presenter Mat drove the Diablo. In a rolling race starting from 80 kilometers per hour in second gear, the Countach led most of the run before the Diablo secured the victory.

A subsequent standing-start race between the two vintage rivals favored the Countach, allowing it to advance to the next round against newer machinery. A 2007 Murcielago equipped with a 6.5-liter V12 producing 640 horsepower and weighing 1,765 kilograms then entered the competition. The newer Murcielago defeated the older Countach by a vast margin in subsequent matchups, maintaining its advantage except for an initial launch advantage by the Countach that could not be sustained.

Modern Supercar Dominance Against Murcielago

In the final rounds, the Aventador and the modern hybrid Revuelto joined the Murcielago on the track. Across all subsequent runs, the performance hierarchy remained identical. The newest Revuelto finished first, followed by the Aventador in second, and the Murcielago in third place.
