The Newcastle Knights confirmed during a fan event at McDonald Jones Stadium that Tyson Frizell will depart the club ahead of 2027, zerotackle.com reported. The forward's future remained uncertain in recent weeks as the club managed roster constraints and salary cap limits to secure a spot for him.
Administrators evaluated retaining Frizell using one of their final two available roster spots for 2027, but available funds prevented a deal. The Newcastle Herald reported earlier this year that the club explored moving another player on to keep the forward due to his value on the field.
Frizell Seeks New Club After Knights Departure
Frizell played in the first grand final of his career with the Knights. He will now seek a new club to finish his career starting in 2027 after the club included him in their departing class during their return to their home ground.

Reports heavily link Frizell to the Wests Tigers for the start of 2027, though no formal agreement has materialized. An unnamed third suitor in Sydney also expressed interest in the experienced middle forward, who spent the majority of his career playing on the edge.
Next Generation for the Forward Pack
Despite Frizell’s departure, the Knights maintain depth in their middle forward rotation. Cody Hopwood is slated to enter the starting side to partner Jacob Saifiti after an immense performance in the grand final.
Saifiti missed several games due to suspension to close out the season but remains available to feature for Fiji during the Rugby League World Cup. The club also holds additional middle forward depth in their system, anchored by this season’s arrival Trey Mooney.
