South Africa has unveiled a dynamic starting XV for their Rugby Championship clash against Australia at Ellis Park on Saturday, signaling an intent to play an expansive game. The team features a new captain in Siya Kolisi at number 8, alongside fly-half Manie libbok pulling the strings, and a host of other intriguing selections.Kick-off is at 4.10pm Irish time.
A New Look Springbok Side
The world champion Springboks are aiming for a fifth consecutive victory over the Wallabies and will be looking to defend their southern hemisphere crown. Head coach Rassie Erasmus has opted for a team brimming with attacking potential, a clear indication of the style of play he envisions.Key changes see Kolisi, a mainstay at flanker, move to the base of the scrum, a position he’s become increasingly familiar with during his time with the Sharks in the United Rugby Championship. This shift allows for a powerful ball-carrying presence and adds another dimension to the Springbok attack.
The backline also boasts exciting combinations. Scrum-half Grant Williams partners libbok, with the powerful Andre Esterhuizen and Jesse Kriel forming a formidable center partnership. The back three will see Aphelele Fassi at full-back, flanked by the pace and finishing ability of Kurt-Lee Arendse and Edwill van der Merwe on the wings.
Forwards Pack Power and Experience
Up front, the Springboks pack a significant punch. Veterans eben Etzebeth and Lood de Jager form a strong lock pairing, providing both physicality and experience. Hooker Malcolm Marx will be supported by props Ox Nche and Wilco Louw in the front row. Flankers Marco van Staden and Pieter-Steph du Toit will complement Kolisi in the loose forwards, offering a blend of tackling prowess and breakdown expertise.
“We’ve been experimenting with player combinations during the (July internationals) and at our conditioning camp in the last two weeks, and we believe this team will allow us to play the type of rugby we want to play against australia,” Erasmus explained. He expressed confidence in Edwill van der Merwe, despite this being his frist start against the Wallabies, stating, “All of the starters except for Edwill have faced them before, and we are confident that he is ready for this challenge.”
Key Absences and Strategic Choices
Damian De Allende is unfortunately sidelined due to injury, while Cheslin Kolbe has been held back as a precaution following his return to training last week. Erasmus has also opted for a 5:3 split between forwards and backs on the bench, further reinforcing the intention to play a more expansive game.
The replacements include Bongi Mbonambi, Jan-hendrik Wessels, Asenathi Ntlabakanye, Franco Mostert, Kwagga smith, cobus Reinach, canan Moodie, and Damian Willemse, providing ample cover and tactical options throughout the match.
Erasmus Warns of Australian challenge
Despite the Springboks’ recent dominance over Australia, Erasmus is wary of a determined Wallabies side. “They are a physical and well-coached team, and we’ll certainly not underestimate how much those performances (against the British & Irish Lions), combined with their motivation to bounce back strongly against us after the last few results between the teams, and win their first match ever at Ellis Park, will inspire them,” he cautioned.
