Seoul’s Mapo-gu district is set to host a lively street cheering event in Hongdae to support the Korean national soccer team in the final match against Japan at the Hangzhou Asian Games. To support the team and provide a platform for citizen participation, Mapo-gu has designated the Hongdae Red Road R6 (formerly Hongdae public parking lot) as the venue for the street cheering, making it the first such event held since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The street cheering event for the Korea-Japan finals will commence at 8:30 pm on a special stage located at Hongdae Red Road R6. To ensure that spectators don’t miss any action, a large 400-inch monitor will broadcast live video of the game. To ensure the safety and security of the event, Mapo-gu has requested cooperation from the police and fire departments, including manpower support. They have also deployed 348 security personnel to oversee security control, crowd management, traffic coordination, and emergency assistance.

In anticipation of potential security incidents, Mapo-gu has taken measures to implement an AI crowd density intelligent control system in six locations in Hongdae. This system will effectively monitor and regulate crowd flow to ensure a safe and successful street cheering event.

Running from 6 PM on the 7th to the 8th, the ‘Red Road Dance Festival’ will precede the street cheering event for the Asian Games finals. This festival serves as a meaningful celebration of the incorporation of breaking events as an official discipline at the Paris Olympics in 2024. The opening ceremony will showcase diverse events, including a grand flash mob and the ‘Red Road Dance Battle,’ with a cash prize of 11 million won up for grabs.
