Korea Provides Year-Round Rapid Dengue Fever Kits for Safe Foreign Travel

(Siheung Times) Under the 2024 People’s Livelihood Policy to protect people’s health, free economic activities and precious daily life, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (Director Ji Young- mi) provides year-round rapid dengue fever kits to ensure safe foreign travel for people in domestic quarantine stations (13) starting this year. This is a strengthened measure to preventively monitor patients coming from abroad as dengue fever has also been designated as a quarantine infectious disease (1 December 2023). Dengue fever is an infectious disease that is transmitted through the bite of mosquito vectors (Aedes mosquitoes, Aedes mosquitoes) infected with the dengue virus and symptoms such as fever, headache, chills and muscle pain appear after an incubation period of 5 to 7 days. There is no vaccine or effective treatment yet, so prevention, such as preventing mosquito bites, is very important.

In 2023, the number of cases worldwide has rapidly increased to pre-COVID-19 levels, with over 5 million cases occurring in 86 countries and over 5,000 deaths (World Health Organization (WHO), European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) ) ). In Korea, the influx of dengue fever patients is also increasing from 2022 due to the revitalization of overseas travel due to recovery from daily life, and a total of 206 cases were confirmed in 2023, doubling compared to to the previous year (103). including Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines and Indonesia was next. Notably, as in the case of a Korean national who visited Bangladesh for business purposes in September last year and died locally from dengue fever, dengue fever has a rapidly increasing mortality rate when reinfected, so Particular caution is needed when frequently visiting areas where it is prevalent. Detailed information on preventing dengue fever can be found in Infectious Diseases Abroad NOW (NOW).

If you have suspicious symptoms (fever, headache, muscle pain, joint pain, etc.) due to a mosquito bite while visiting a high-risk country where mainly dengue fever patients are imported, you should notify the quarantine officer and be notified Rapid Dengue Fever Test Kit. However, if the rapid test kit is a simple test and is confirmed positive, you need to visit a medical institution and undergo a confirmatory diagnostic test. Commissioner Ji Young-mi asked: “Those who intend to travel abroad, should be aware of the prevention rules of dengue fever during the whole travel process to ensure safe travel, and actively use the rapid dengue fever test kit dengue fever of the quarantine station”.
