Seoul, South Korea – Accomplished artists Ayoung Kim and Sanghee have been recognized for their exceptional talents at the esteemed Free Ars Electronica 2023 awards ceremony. The event, held in Linz, Austria, celebrates outstanding achievements in the field of digital art.

Kim Ah-young, a recipient of the 2022 support project by the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture, was honored with the coveted ‘Golden Nika’ award for her remarkable creation, ‘Delivery Dansun’s Sphere’. This captivating video work, a poignant reflection on the impact of the pandemic, showcases a female delivery rider navigating a virtual Seoul. Kim’s thought-provoking piece was made possible through the support of the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture and the Hyundai Gallery.

Sanghee, also selected for the 2022 support project, received the prestigious ‘Special Award’ for her debut work, ‘One Room Babel’. This remarkable achievement highlights Sanghee’s talent and dedication to her craft. Moreover, this recognition signifies the growing prominence of Korean artists on the global stage.

Free Ars Electronica, an internationally renowned digital art hub, received an astounding 3,176 submissions from 98 countries for the 2023 event. Among the submissions, Kim and Sanghee stood out in the ‘New Animation Art’ category. Out of 1,116 participants, they secured the first and second positions, respectively, reaffirming their remarkable talent.

At the 1st Seoul Convergence Arts Festival ‘Unfold X’ held in Seongsu-dong last November, visitors appreciate Sanghee’s studio tent

The news that Kim Ah-young and Sang-hee, selected for the 2022 support project of the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture (CEO Lee Chang-ki), have been selected for the main award ‘Golden Nika’ and ‘Special Award’ at the ‘Free Ars Electronica 2023’, digital art hub and representative award ceremony This was known on the 12th, local time in Austria.

Ars Electronica has hosted the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria since 1979, and has been operating the ‘Free Ars Electronica’ awards ceremony since 1987. The competition was held in four categories: New Animation Art, Digital Music and Sound Art, AI and Art of Life, and u19-create your world (in the field of supporting ideas for youth under 19 living in Austria). In each category, the ‘Golden Nika’, also known as the Academy Award for digital art, is awarded, as well as a ‘Special Award’ and an ‘Honorary Award’.

The award ceremony will take place at the Ars Electronica Festival 2023 which will be held in Linz, Austria, between September 6 and 10.

‘Delivery Dansun’s Sphere’ by Ayoung Kim.

In 2022, artist Ayoung Kim, who has been selected for a number of foundation support projects such as support for artistic creative activities and support for art foundations by the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture, won the Golden Nika for ‘Dancer’s Delivery’ Gu’. NArT’, worked as a promising art support artist (MAP) selected in 2014, was selected for artistic (visual) creative activity support in 2012, 2013, 2018, 2022, and an art-based support project in 2021 and 2022. He has steadily built his own art world.

Award-winning ‘Delivery Dancer’s Sphere’ is a ‘pandemic fiction’ video work made with a female delivery rider protagonist who runs while trapped in the constantly updating navigation maze a delivery app in the virtual background of Seoul. It was produced with the support of the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture and the Hyundai Gallery.

Sanghee Sang-hee’s first work, ‘One Room Babel’, which debuted with the Seoul Institute for Arts and Culture’s ‘UnfoldX’, won a special award and was selected for the Seoul Institute’s combination art creation and production support on for Arts and Culture in 2021, and was produced in 2022. It was first presented through the exhibition ‘Seoul UnfoldX Convergence Arts Festival 2022’ held at S-Factory in Seongsu-dong, and with this award, ‘ Seoul Convergence Arts Festival UnfoldX’ Seoul Arts and Culture Foundation’ a convergence art and technology festival representing Korea

‘Seoul UnfoldX Convergence Arts Festival 2023’ will be held on November 10th at Seoul Culture Station 284. This exhibition will showcase selected new artists and invited domestic and foreign works.

‘Seoul UnfoldX Convergence Arts Festival 2023’, which marks its second round this year, will be held for about a month between November 10th and December 13th, expanding the scale and period of the exhibition from last year. In this festival, there will be a number of invited works and works in collaboration with domestic and foreign institutions such as Germany’s ‘Art and Media Technology Center (ZKM)’ and ‘Gwangju Media Art Platform (G.MAP)’, including works by five creatives and production support artists, are presented.
