There was an incident where a Korean businessman was detained at the Chinese customs. The reason was that the map of the world attached to his diary showed Taiwan as a separate country, which violated the ‘one China’ principle.

According to Yonhap News on the 25th, Mr Jeong (72), who departed from Incheon International Airport on the 24th and arrived at Taoxian Shenyang Airport in China’s Liaoning Province, was stopped by customs officials while passing through the security checkpoint . When customs officials opened Mr. Jeong’s trunk and examined his diary, they found a map showing Taiwan as a separate country.

The problem started from here. The map was small, measuring 30cm wide and 20cm tall, and Taiwan was written in bold letters with ‘Taiwan’ and ‘Taipei’ written in red.

Customs officials disagreed with the map because it showed Taiwan as if it were a separate country. It was said to be against the ‘One China’ principle. They said the boundary marks around Xizang (Tibet) were also ambiguous. Customs officers took Mr Jeong to the office and detained him, saying they needed to investigate. Mr Jeong protested that he did not even know there was a map attached, but the customs officials did not listen to him.

When Mr. Jeong protested strongly and asked for help from Korean residents in Shenyang, customs officials reportedly released Mr. Jeong after about an hour. Before releasing Mr Jeong, customs officials tore the map out of his diary, filled out a storage document for the items, and told him to pick it up when he returned home.

Mr Jeong said, “I have been doing business in China for 30 years, but this is the first time I have come across anything like this. I can speak Chinese, so I was able to protest, but if you are a foreigner visiting with China for the first time, how embarrassed and scared would you be?”

The Korean Consulate General in Shenyang announced that it would investigate the circumstances of the incident and strongly insist on preventing this from happening again if the customs authorities’ measures are found to be excessive. In addition, we plan to ask people to be careful when carrying controversial maps when entering China.
