(Johannesburg = Yonhap News) Reporter Hyunmin Yoo = A Korean man in his 20s who illegally collected scorpions while traveling to South Africa was sentenced to a fine of about 27 million won (including fines) by a local court.

According to the Korean Embassy in South Africa on the 27th (local time), the Parle District Court in the Western Cape Province of South Africa fined Kim (26), a Korean national, who was charged the day before on charges of illegal possession of wild animals, with a fine of 381,676 rand (about 27 million won.) or sentenced to two years imprisonment.

The court explained that 341,676 rand (about 24 million won) of the fine was in the nature of a fine and that it had to be paid even if he had to spend two years in prison.

On December 26 last year, Mr Kim was caught during a search and inspection after catching about 10 scorpions in the village of Parle, a famous wine producing region about 60km east of Cape Town.

He has since been jailed for more than a month at the Allandale Detention Center in Parle Village, where he has been on probation.

Mr Kim is said to be planning to decide whether to appeal after consulting a lawyer based on the ruling.

An embassy official said, “South Africa strictly punishes the illegal collection of wild animals and plants without permission,” and asked, “Be especially careful.”
