South Korea’s mixed martial arts national team is preparing for the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, training in rented gyms and goshiwon rooms while pursuing the sport’s first Asian Games gold medals.

The path to the upcoming Asian Games represents a major institutional shift for the sport. Inclusion in the country’s formal sports administration system was achieved after the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee officially granted associate member status to the Korean MMA Association.

Securing Official Quotas for Aichi-Nagoya

South Korea has secured a three-athlete roster for the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, where mixed martial arts will feature as an official sport for the first time. The Korean MMA Federation announced on the 13th that it successfully acquired an additional quota for the 77-kilogram traditional weight class, allowing Road FC welterweight champion Yoon Tae-young to join the national squad.

Yoon earned his selection following a strong performance at the Asian MMA Championships held in May. He joins Choi Eun-seok, who will compete in the 71-kilogram modern division, and Lee Bo-mi, who is slated for the 54-kilogram modern division.

According to comments made by Korean MMA Federation President Jung Moon-hong on the YouTube channel Gao-hyung Life, the quota expansion was achieved through continuous communication and diplomatic efforts with the Asian MMA Federation and its president, Gordon Tang. Jung noted that holding a separate selection trial for candidate athletes posed too high a risk of injury, prompting consultations that confirmed Yoon’s spot on the team.

Overcoming Institutional Hurdles and Financial Realities

Despite gaining formal recognition from the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee, domestic fighters face stark financial and logistical hurdles. Athletes have relied on makeshift arrangements, utilizing rented commercial gym spaces and small residential goshiwon rooms to sustain their rigorous preparation schedules.

Jeong Mun-hong, current Road FC chairman and leader of the Korean MMA Association, acknowledged the difficult history of the sport during the association’s admission announcement.

About 20 years have passed since Korean MMA took its first steps, and I express deep respect and gratitude to the coaches who have preserved Korean MMA through prejudice and hardship, the first-generation fighters, and all current athletes.

The transition from a discipline viewed as somewhat distant from institutionalized sports to an officially sanctioned Asian Games event has required extensive administrative groundwork. The Korean MMA Association worked as a member organization of the Asian MMA Association under the Olympic Council of Asia to secure the sport’s inclusion in the Aichi-Nagoya program.

A Historic Debut on the Continental Stage

The 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games will mark the first time mixed martial arts is contested as an official sport. For the South Korean delegation, the tournament represents an opportunity to validate domestic growth driven by fighters appearing in global promotions like the UFC.

With the national roster finalized at three competitors—Choi Eun-seok, Lee Bo-mi, and Yoon Tae-young—the federation is turning its full focus toward training regimens ahead of the September opening, aiming to secure gold medals in the discipline despite the limited training infrastructure.
