Recent Election Results
Kosovo held parliamentary elections on Sunday, March 3, 2024, marking the second time voters have gone to the polls in 11 months. Initial exit polls indicate a strong victory for the left-leaning Vetevendosje (Self-Determination Movement) party, led by Prime Minister Albin Kurti.
According to a survey conducted by broadcaster T7, based on interviews with 4,600 voters, Vetevendosje secured approximately 43.5% of the vote. This represents a slight betterment over their performance in the February elections.
Party Breakdown
The Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) came in second with 23.6% of the vote, followed by the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) at 15.9% and the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) with 7.2%.
Political Context and Snap Election
The snap election was triggered by the failure to form a workable parliamentary majority following the February 9th elections. While vetevendosje also won the most votes in February, coalition negotiations with opposition parties ultimately collapsed, leading President Vjosa osmani to dissolve parliament and call for new elections.
Despite the improved showing, Vetevendosje is still projected to fall short of an outright majority, making a single-party government unlikely at this stage. Forming a coalition will likely be necessary.
