Pioneering Art Curator Koyo Kouoh dies at 57
Koyo Kouoh, a highly influential art curator and the first African woman to be appointed artistic director of the Venice Biennale, has died at the age of 57. The organization announced her death, noting the “immense void” she leaves in contemporary art. Kouoh passed away may 10, shortly before the unveiling of the theme for the 61st edition of the Biennale Arte 2026.

born in Cameroon, Kouoh gained international recognition for her dedication to promoting African artists. She recently served as the executive director and chief curator of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art in Cape Town (Zeitz MOCAA).
Kouoh, in a statement, emphasized the importance of her role in creating opportunities for other women. She envisioned a future where such achievements are commonplace, with many others following in her footsteps. Her curatorial approach was rooted in a feminist perspective, informed by Black ancestral feminism.
She aimed to challenge reductive narratives about the continent and its art, fostering meaningful engagement and shared ownership. kouoh highlighted the need to amplify under-represented practices, particularly those of African women, and build systems that support artists beyond temporary events.

Kouoh admired artists such as Nigerian-born Otobong Nkanga, Kenyan-American visual artist Wangechi Mutu, and Ethiopian-American contemporary visual artist Julie Mehretu. She was also inspired by a younger generation of women artists pushing boundaries, including Tabita Rezaire, Tiona Nekkia McClodden, Sandra Mujinga, and Precious Okoyomon.
