GCC⁤ States Address Global Water Challenges at UN Council

Geneva – Ambassador ​Nasser Al-Hain,Kuwait’s permanent‍ representative to the‍ U.N.‍ in Geneva, addressed the 59th session of ‍the⁤ united Nations Human Rights Council, highlighting the Gulf Cooperation Council’s commitment to solving global water challenges.​ Al-Hain, speaking as chairman of the GCC ambassadors, stressed the ‌importance of regional and international cooperation‌ to support innovative solutions for water resources.

Al-Hain​ referenced initiatives by GCC⁣ countries, including Saudi Arabia’s plan to establish the World Water Organization in⁤ Riyadh. He also noted that the United Arab Emirates and Senegal will host​ the United Nations Water Conference in 2026, the first such conference⁤ following the adoption ⁤of the UN’s⁤ unified strategy on safe‌ drinking water and sanitation for 2024.

The GCC ‌states consider access to safe drinking water a fundamental‌ human⁣ right, closely linked to health, food, and a decent standard ‍of ‍living. Al-Hain expressed​ regret that many people worldwide‌ still face obstacles in accessing this right.

Al-Hain emphasized the high priority the GCC⁣ places on this issue, especially⁢ given ​the ‌geographical and climatic challenges the council faces. He noted the adoption⁢ of advanced policies for effective and sustainable management of water resources.

The GCC renewed its call for enhanced international cooperation to⁢ develop ​innovative and sustainable solutions to ensure universal access to safe‍ drinking water without discrimination, reaffirming⁣ its commitment ⁤to water and sustainable development issues.
