Kyprios, the seven-year-old star stayer trained by Aidan O’Brien, has been retired from racing after aggravating a previous injury. The dual Ascot Gold Cup winner concludes his career wiht an remarkable record of 17 victories in 21 starts.
The son of Galileo enjoyed a stellar 2022, winning all six of his races, including his first Gold Cup. after missing much of 2023,he returned to form last year,securing seven wins,highlighted by another Gold Cup triumph. The decision to retire kyprios prioritizes the horseS well-being, according to his part-owners, Coolmore.
coolmore announced the retirement on X, stating, ”Due to an aggravation of an old ringbone lesion we have decided to take no chances with Kyprios and even though he is currently sound and doing well the decision has been made to retire him from racing.”
O’Brien reported that kyprios took a couple of “lame steps” during his recent appearance at Leopardstown in the Saval Beg. Although the horse appeared improved the following morning, connections opted for retirement out of caution.
“He’s been an unbelievable horse,” O’Brien told the PA news agency.
O’Brien emphasized the respect everyone had for Kyprios, explaining the decision was made to avoid any risks after the horse showed slight discomfort. He lauded Kyprios’s extraordinary mindset and talent, suggesting few horses could have recovered from such a serious injury.
“We had to be very respectful of him.In every way he is perfect but just when he pulled up a little bit edgy the last day we couldn’t take any risks.”
