Immigration Crackdown spurs‌ Protests, Arrests in Los Angeles

Updated⁢ June 12, 2025

federal immigration authorities are intensifying⁢ operations across Southern ‌California, sparking protests and arrests⁢ in downtown Los Angeles. Teh‌ immigration enforcement actions have spread fear,⁢ with ⁢reports of agents near schools, ‌workplaces, and churches, according to advocates. At the same time, the Los Angeles Police⁤ Department (LAPD) ⁢cites increasing success in controlling violence and property damage, partly due ‌to an 8 p.m. curfew.

The recent surge ⁢in activity ‍follows an immigration raid in the Garment District. Community members swiftly responded with protests, challenging the government’s⁤ deportation priorities. Demonstrations have ⁣since spread, with agents detaining immigrants, ⁢a majority of whom have no criminal ⁣records, according ‍to White House officials.

In Downey, masked federal agents detained at least a dozen people from local businesses. Community intervention⁣ prevented the detention of one man, who was chased and apprehended after attempting to flee on his bicycle, according ‌to ABC7. melyssa Rivas, who recorded the ⁢incident, described it as a “full-on ‌kidnapping scene.”

Downey Councilman Mario Trujillo stated the raids ‌were “creating havoc and fear” within the community during a Wednesday news conference. As federal presence ⁣increased, including‍ the deployment of the National ‌Guard ‌and Marines, so did the scale of‌ the demonstrations.

LAPD announced the arrest of remaining downtown protesters Wednesday evening. Earlier, Mayor Karen Bass implemented a curfew for downtown L.A. to quell violence and vandalism. Police reported 17 arrests for curfew violations the previous night. The curfew covers the Civic Center, including City Hall, the county courthouse,LAPD headquarters, and federal buildings.

While many have protested peacefully, some have reportedly ⁤burglarized businesses or hurled objects at law enforcement. The LAPD has ‌adjusted tactics, issuing dispersal orders earlier and targeting⁤ those throwing objects.Protesters allege they are being “kettled,” or trapped, ⁢by police lines.Law enforcement has also received support from surrounding agencies.

Los Angeles‌ County District Attorney Nathan⁢ Hochman announced charges against five individuals related to ⁤the protests, including assault on a peace officer and vandalism. Hundreds marched from Pershing Square to City Hall on Wednesday evening, where police ‌declared the gathering an unlawful assembly and used less-lethal munitions ⁤to disperse the crowd. Officers on horseback moved into the crowd, leading to more dispersal into gloria Molina Grand Park.

“It looked like a full-on kidnapping scene out of ‌a movie, it was scary,”
