Los Angeles Protests Focus on Immigration, ICE Raids, Detentions
Updated June 10, 2025
Hundreds of people gathered in Downtown Los Angeles on Monday to protest recent immigration policies, ICE raids, and detentions. The demonstration followed a weekend of similar actions and saw protesters facing off against National Guard troops.
The day began with a rally led by unions protesting the arrest of labor leader David Huerta, who was later ordered released on $50,000 bail. Demonstrators marched while speakers led prayers and chanted slogans such as “Freedom now” and “Sí se puede.” Signs reading “ICE out of LA,” “Keep LA families together,” and “Educación no deportación” were prominently displayed near City Hall.
Following the rally, protesters marched toward the Los Angeles detention center. organizers urged peaceful protesting, but some individuals spray-painted anti-ICE messages on buildings. A band on a flatbed truck played music as demonstrators danced. The march briefly turned into an impromptu dance party at Los Angeles Plaza Park.
Tensions rose as the march approached the detention center. The California National Guard and police officers stood guard outside the federal building, facing demonstrators who blocked the street with vehicles and their bodies. Protesters chanted for the release of detainees, demanding, “Bring them home!”
Amidst the demonstration, news emerged that hundreds of Marines were being deployed to guard federal property, reflecting President Trump’s stance against the protests. Some protesters donned gas masks as the afternoon progressed.
Christian Ramirez, political director at SEIU, United Service Workers West, said, “David Huerta is a mentor…I could only imagine if the highest ranking Latino leader in the labor movement was treated that way — What kind of treatment do immigrant workers face on the day at work every day?”
A participant with Contra-Tiempo Artivist Theater, who wished to remain anonymous, stated, “I had a higher education because of all the sacrifices my family took to be here… I had a parent also taken away by ICE when I was in middle school…It’s completely shattering and I can only imagine what some families are going through right now. So I’m here for that.”
Gina Gray, a high school English teacher with United Teachers Los Angeles, noted, “Our students are afraid… as we’re approaching summer break, I’m a little afraid because they won’t have the classroom… what I find joy in is reminding them that the next presidential election, they’ll be voters… They’re in the ninth grade now. They’re 14. when we vote for our next president, they’ll be voters.”
LA County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath said, “We’ve certainly seen our fair share of emergencies here in Los Angeles already in 2025… the fact that our president would disregard proper chain of command in terms of how we deploy our safety resources, just shows that this is not about safety. This is about power and control, and it is indeed absolutely unacceptable… We are opposing this fascist attack on our democracy, and we have a right to do that.”
What’s next
The situation remains tense in Los Angeles as community groups and activists continue to advocate for immigration reform and the rights of detainees. Further demonstrations are expected as the debate over federal immigration policy continues.
