Major League Baseball’s Los Angeles Dodgers are drawing heavy interest in Japanese high school pitcher Shoki Oda, with scouts estimating a potential contract value between $3 million and $5 million. The 18-year-old amateur standout from Yokohama High School clocked a 157 km/h fastball during the 108th Japanese National High School Baseball Championship, known locally as the summer Koshien.
Contract Projections And Major League Scrutiny
Major League scouts project Oda’s signing bonus to reach roughly $3 million to $5 million, equivalent to about 4 billion to 6.6 billion South Korean won. That figure stands in stark contrast to Nippon Professional Baseball standards. According to Sanspo.com as cited by isplus.joins.com, the upper limit for a first-round NPB draft signing bonus is capped at 100 million yen, which translates to roughly 840 million South Korean won, creating a wide financial gap when including annual salaries.
Beyond the Los Angeles Dodgers, several other Major League Baseball franchises have closely monitored the young pitcher. Tokyo Sports reported that representatives from the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Chicago Cubs, and San Diego Padres have directly observed Oda during regional tournament games.
Yomiuri Giants Draft Selection And Major League Declaration
The recruiting race follows a rapid succession of professional milestones for the high school prospect. On October 15, Oda officially declared his intention to pursue a career in the United States. Just one week later on October 22, the prominent NPB franchise Yomiuri Giants selected Oda with their first-round pick during the annual rookie draft.

The Los Angeles Dodgers already feature several high-profile Japanese players who serve as core contributors to the major league roster, including Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Roki Sasaki. Adding Oda to the organization would further expand the team’s established pipeline of Japanese talent.
