Laboratory leaks have once again become a hot topic with the recent Pluribus series. However, when we talk about laboratory leaks, many of us immediately think of the Covid-19 pandemic.Because during that time,the issue of the pandemic originating from a laboratory in Wuhan was discussed for days.
Speaking to El Pais, Spanish virologist Xavier Abad began his discussion of laboratory leaks by giving the example of the Covid-19 virus. abad, head of the biological control unit of the Animal Health Center (CReSA) in Barcelona, said, “The possibility of the SARS-Cov-2 virus leaking from the laboratory is not very likely, is it? But it is quite possible.”
Abad also recalled that Spanish security forces recently conducted an audit at the research center on suspicion of a leak of the African swine fever virus, searching for various evidence. “I have read a lot about incidents and accidents in laboratories. More than 100 incidents have been recorded worldwide, and these are only the visible part of what actually happened,” he said.
All assumptions are still on the table in the event of a leak of African swine fever, but the focus is currently on CReSA.
CReSA is a center located on the Bellaterra campus of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, housing perilous pathogens. The reason the laboratory was involved in the investigation is as a wild boar near the facility was infected with a strain similar to the one found there last November. This laboratory, which did not have a double-wall application, was undergoing renovation at the time and experiments on the African swine fever virus were being conducted at the facility.
