The water level at Lake Powell fell to 3,519.91 feet above sea level, reaching a record low that deepens the ongoing crisis along the Colorado River system, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. The alarming milestone was recorded on Saturday, dropping the United States’ second-largest reservoir just slightly beneath a previous record set in April 2023.
According to U.S. Bureau of Reclamation data reported by the Associated Press, Lake Powell is now more than 20 feet lower than it was at the start of the year. The reservoir sits roughly 30 feet away from the critical threshold where its turbines would stop generating hydroelectric power. Federal officials warned in April that a major intervention will be necessary to prevent the water level from reaching that threshold before the end of the year.
This historic drop at Lake Powell follows a similar record low reached about a week prior at Lake Mead, the river’s other major reservoir. The two bodies of water are now at their lowest levels in nearly seven decades, according to U.S. Bureau of Reclamation data. A recent paper published by academics and retired water officials notes that the last time their combined storage was this small was in May 1957, during the initial construction of the Glen Canyon Dam that holds back Lake Powell before it began filling in 1963.
Threats to Regional Water and Hydropower Supplies
The plummeting water levels present an immediate threat to the Colorado River Basin, a vital resource supporting wildlife, hydropower generation, and more than 40 million people across seven U.S. states. The basin relies on coordinated management between the federal government and the states of California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, and Colorado.
Persistent overuse, rising temperatures, and a record-dry winter have severely drained both Lake Powell and Lake Mead over successive years. Federal agencies and state authorities have struggled to secure a long-term management agreement for the shrinking resource. In response to the worsening conditions, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation proposed a 10-year plan in July that outlines major potential water cuts for Arizona, California, and Nevada.

Beyond power generation and municipal supplies, the depletion has heavily disrupted Lake Powell’s substantial tourism industry.
