Ministry denounces “Mockery” of People with Dwarfism
The Spanish Ministry of Social Rights has publicly condemned the hiring of individuals with dwarfism as entertainment at the party, stating that the law has been violated and the rights of people with disabilities have been infringed. The ministry’s strong stance comes as the Association of People with Dwarfism and Achondroplasia (ADEE) has vowed to take legal action.
ADEE’s Strong Condemnation and Legal Threat
The ADEE has issued a scathing denouncement of the party’s entertainment, asserting that it “perpetuates stereotypes, fuels discrimination, and undermines the image and rights” of people with disabilities. In a formal statement, the organization declared that such actions not only contravene current legislation but also violate the basic ethical values of an egalitarian and respectful society.
The ADEE specifically cited the general law on the rights of persons with disabilities, which explicitly prohibits “Shows or recreational activities in which people with disabilities or other circumstances are used to provoke mockery, ridicule, or derision from the public in a manner contrary to the respect due to human dignity.”
entertainer Defends Participation, Citing Dignity and Legality
However, a contrasting perspective has emerged from one of the entertainers who participated in the event. Speaking anonymously to Spanish radio station RAC1,the artist defended thier involvement,stating,”No-one disrespected us,we worked in peace.”
The entertainer expressed confusion over the widespread controversy, emphasizing their status as “normal people, who do what we want, in an absolutely legal way.” They questioned the basis for the backlash, asking, “We work as entertainers. why can’t we do it? Because of our physical condition?”
The artist stressed their professionalism and self-awareness, asserting, “We know what our limit is and we will never exceed it: we are not fairground monkeys.” They described the performance as lasting one hour, after which the entertainers joined the party, engaging in activities like dancing, distributing drinks, and performing magic. “Everyone had a great time,” they added.
Barcelona Club’s Position under Review
When approached for comment by BBC Sport, a spokesperson for FC Barcelona stated that the club was “not in a position to comment on an act that falls strictly within the private sphere.” However, they indicated that the club’s position would be reassessed once ”concrete information” has been ascertained. The controversy highlights the ongoing societal debate surrounding the representation and treatment of people with disabilities in public and private events.
