Norris admitted he was surprised by the result after navigating a layout that had drivers warning of tricky corner entries and unforgiving walls.

“I’m shocked. I’m a little bit surprised to be here. It was probably one of the best laps I’ve done ever in my career,” Norris told BBC Sport.

The qualifying session ran cleanly without any red flags or stoppages, defying pre-weekend predictions of a crash-fest driven by the tight nature of the new street venue. While teams had run private sweepstakes anticipating multiple incidents during the hour, the grid settled its starting order without a single stoppage.

Ferrari Fades as Hamilton Drops Back

Ferrari once again saw a promising qualifying performance slip away as the session reached its climax. Early indications suggested pole would be contested between Antonelli and the Ferrari entries, but the red cars ultimately faded when it mattered most, according to BBC Sport.

Lewis Hamilton, who crashed at the final corner during practice and missed the latter half of that session, managed to improve on his final flying lap by just 0.06 seconds. That marginal gain wasn’t enough to stop him from slipping backward on the timing sheets. Hamilton edged teammate Charles Leclerc by a razor-thin margin of 0.006 seconds.

“I felt pretty awesome in Q3 run one, and then just didn’t have any more grip or power in the last one,” Hamilton said, according to BBC Sport.

Finding the Flow State Under Pressure

The McLaren driver noted that maintaining composure was vital to executing the pole-winning run.

“The adrenaline was high on the last lap. You have to relax and let it all flow. It’s easy to get tense around here. There’s a lot of walls that come at you pretty quickly,” Norris said, as reported by BBC Sport.

The British driver added that he felt strong throughout the weekend but struggled initially to find the necessary relaxation. By the time he crossed the line, he felt he had achieved everything he wanted, describing the effort as entering a true flow state despite a minor brush with the limit at the final corner.
