Wicklow town is gearing up to become a major destination for cycling enthusiasts with the construction of a brand new,state-of-the-art bike pump track.Set to be the largest of its kind in Ireland, the track promises fun for all ages and skill levels, and a welcome boost for the local economy.
A Pump Track for Everyone
What exactly is a pump track? These increasingly popular cycling facilities are designed to be ridden with minimal pedalling. Instead, riders use body weight and momentum to “pump” through the track’s rolling hills, banked turns, and smooth transitions. This makes them accessible to everyone from complete beginners to seasoned BMX and mountain bike riders.
The new Wicklow pump track is being designed with inclusivity in mind. It won’t just cater to experienced cyclists; it will be a space where families can enjoy a day out, kids can learn new skills, and anyone can experience the thrill of two-wheeled fun.
Boosting Wicklow Town & ireland’s Cycling Scene
The benefits of this project extend far beyond just providing a new recreational facility. Local officials anticipate a notable increase in tourism to Wicklow town, drawing cyclists and their families from across Ireland and possibly even further afield.
“It will be the largest bike pump track in Ireland and should also help provide Wicklow town with a boost in the numbers of visitors,” a spokesperson confirmed. “It’s all vrey positive and hopefully the works should be completed before the end of September, in time for an official opening in October.”
This new addition builds on the growing momentum of cycling infrastructure across Ireland. The first full BMX track opened in Ratoath, Co Meath in 2011, and since then, tracks have sprung up in Cork, Dublin, Lisburn, and Courtown, demonstrating a clear demand for these facilities. More recent additions include tracks in Dungarvan,Co Waterford, and the Dodder Valley park in Dublin – the latter of which Velosolutions, the developers, have described as the “largest full asphalt pump track in Ireland” at 1,300 square metres.
A Collaborative Effort & The Future of Irish Pump Tracks
The Wicklow pump track is a testament to what can be achieved when communities work together.pascal Burke, chair of Wicklow Town Team, highlighted the strong support from the Wicklow Municipal District staff and councillors, stating it’s “another great example of what can be achieved for the local community by all interested parties working constructively together.”
While Bike Park Ireland in Tipperary previously claimed the title of having the largest pump track in Ireland, the facility has unfortunately been closed as 2019 due to insurance challenges. This underscores the importance of enduring funding and insurance solutions for these valuable community assets.
The opening of the Wicklow pump track represents an exciting step forward for cycling in Ireland. It’s a sign that investment in these facilities is continuing, providing more opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to get active, enjoy the outdoors, and experience the joy of cycling. We can expect to see even more pump tracks and BMX facilities popping up across the country in the years to come, further solidifying Ireland’s position as a destination for cycling enthusiasts.
