Las Vegas Police Tesla Cybertruck Fleet
Las Vegas SheriffS Department to Deploy Tesla Cybertrucks as Patrol Vehicles
The Las Vegas metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) is set to add Tesla Cybertrucks to its patrol fleet, thanks to a donation from an anonymous benefactor. Sheriff Kevin McMahill announced the acquisition of the electric vehicles, highlighting their unique benefits like a shorter turn radius and representing “innovation, sustainability, and our continued commitment to serve this community.”
the department received the vehicles at no cost to taxpayers, and officials assure that all existing recalls have been addressed. The Cybertrucks will not be equipped with Tesla’s self-driving feature.
Recent Cybertruck Recalls:
* March 2024: A recall of over 46,000 Cybertrucks due to exterior panels possibly detaching while driving. Tesla offered free panel replacements.
* october 2024: A recall of over 63,000 Cybertrucks due to excessively shining headlights potentially causing driver distraction and increasing collision risk.
* Ongoing Investigation: federal regulators are investigating Tesla’s self-driving feature following numerous incidents of vehicles running red lights or driving on the wrong side of the road.
Concerns Raised:
The deployment of Cybertrucks has sparked some controversy.
* Intimidation vs. Safety: Laura Martin, executive director of the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada Action Fund, believes the trucks’ design “seems like they’re designed for intimidation and not safety” and suggests the Sheriff is prioritizing “corporate giveaways and police militarisation.”
* Private Donation & Political Context: The donation follows a public display of support from former President Donald Trump, who purchased a Tesla earlier this year amid concerns about the company’s sales. Athar Haseebullah, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada, draws a parallel between the two events.
* Surveillance Concerns: Haseebullah also expressed worries about the Cybertrucks’ potential for surveillance.
The LVMPD hopes the Cybertrucks will enhance their ability to serve the community effectively and responsibly, while critics question the motivations behind the donation and the potential impact on community relations.
