Mexico’s President Denies Discussing Venezuela Elections with Colombian Counterpart
Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the President of Mexico, has denied discussing the upcoming elections in Venezuela with his Colombian counterpart, Gustavo Petro.
During his morning press conference, López Obrador stated that he has a great deal of respect for Petro, but did not engage in any conversations about the Venezuelan elections.
The Mexican leader’s comments come after the country’s chancellor predicted a virtual conversation between López Obrador, Petro, and Brazilian President Lula Da Silva to discuss the situation in Venezuela following the December 28 elections.
López Obrador expressed his admiration for the Colombian people and President Petro, who he believes is under significant pressure due to criticism for his silence on the Venezuelan situation.
“I respect and love the Colombian people a lot,” López Obrador said. “President Petro is subject to strong pressure from those who were the owners of Colombia, and it’s a difficult situation.”
The Mexican President also sent a message of support to Petro and the Colombian people, urging them to “take advantage of the time to change things, to transform” and to resist the influence of oligarchs and privileged groups.
“The conservative is very hypocritical,” López Obrador warned. “They suffer from amnesia, forgetting what they do when they govern, and suddenly they present themselves as champions of freedom, democracy, and justice.”
