On the 29th, lawyer Masaki Kito (62) updated his Twitter account. He commented on Taro Kono (61), Minister of Digital Affairs of the Liberal Democratic Party, who announced his candidacy for the September LDP presidential election.
On the 26th, Kono held a press conference in the Diet and officially announced his candidacy for the September party presidential election. Regarding party reforms following the faction slush fund scandal, he said he would ask lawmakers who had not reported their political funds to return them in order to restore trust. He essentially shelved his own argument for “zero nuclear power” and approved the replacement of nuclear power plants.
He also touched on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the worsening security environment in East Asia, emphasizing that “this is a presidential election in which we must discuss the shape of the world.” It is expected that he will use the Aso faction, to which he belongs, as his backing in the presidential election.
Regarding Kono, who has also spoken about his own opinions on television programs, Kito made the following request: “I would have liked Kono to talk specifically about the concrete legislation to combat slander that is urgently needed. Blocks are partially useful against slander, but they are only a “self-help” type of measure, and of course arbitrary use becomes a problem, which is why the public has doubts about blocks placed by those in power. I would also like him to discuss nuclear power plants and the Unification Church without shying away from them.”
